Citrix Accelerates XenDesktop 4
XenDesktop 4 Feature Pack 1 further widens Citrix virtual desktop
leadership by providing the best high definition user experience in
the desktop virtualisation market, with better reliability and
higher availability than a traditional PC.
Key capabilities of XenDesktop 4 include:
- Integration with Microsoft App-V
- Support for Windows Server 2008 R2
- Shorten Logon Times by 5X
- Enhancements to Professional Graphics
Citrix and VMware “Bare” all – Bare metal Client Hypervisor
Update.
Leading virtualisation software vendors Citrix Systems and VMware
are both running behind in plans to ship so-called bare-metal
hypervisors for desktop PCs.
Developing all the necessary drivers needed by PC users has
proven to be one major challenge. Another roadblock may be
persuading PC vendors to ship and support these hypervisors with
their hardware.
A bare-metal hypervisor, also known as a type 1 hypervisor, runs
directly on system hardware rather than on top of a host operating
system. That allows one or more operating systems to run on top of
the hypervisor as virtual machines.
Desktop virtualisation allows corporate IT departments to easily
ensure a standard operating environment for all users, but the
current approach requires that the desktop environment be networked
to a server where the virtual OS is actually running. With
bare-metal desktop hypervisors, performance is improved because the
system is running locally, not over a network, and users are also
able to work offline.
Citrix and VMware were expected to ship their respective
products, XenClient and Client Virtualisation Platform, before the
end of 2009. Citrix is waiting for the results of an ongoing closed
beta test before committing to any dates and VMware is hoping to
have something out toward the end of 2010. To find out how Client
side Hypervisors may be a benefit to your users or for more
information on the plans of each vendor contact us.
Microsoft Licensing for Desktop Virtualisation
On March 18th 2010 Microsoft shared its vision for the virtual
desktop, addressed any past issues with licensing in a Virtual
Desktop environment and looked forward to the future.
Microsoft has definitely been reviewing customer feedback and has
announces that, as of 1st July 2010, the Microsoft Virtual
Enterprise Centralised Desktop (VECD) will be bundled into the
Windows Software Assurance (SA) program. This ensures that any
customer that currently has Software Assurance has the choice to
continue to deploy desktops locally or make use of Desktop
Virtualisation and deploy desktops in the Datacentre without having
to worry about the implications of licensing the desktop OS.
Additionally Microsoft is also extending the remote access rights so
that license is not fixed to a single PC in the primary user’s home,
offering greater flexibility to the stack.
But wait, there’s more. Microsoft is also introducing a new license
model to cover non SA devices such as Contractors PC’s, Thin
Clients, Non Windows devices (Apple Macs) etc. The new license is
Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) and will be priced on an annual
basis.

affects you please contact

Migrating to Windows 7 – Time to virtualise the user?
Windows 7 looks set to be the next desktop operating system, with
many organisations refreshing their PC estate as they migrate up.More...
This refresh will inevitably bring about a re-assessment of the
corporate desktop estate; one that is likely to consider lowering
desktop management costs by moving to centrally-managed virtual
desktops.
Migrating employees to Windows 7 could be a risky and expensive
proposition, especially if it affects the employee's working
environment.
User Virtualisation technology manages all the user-specific
elements of the Windows 7 migration process as well as providing an
alternative approach to managing the user aspects of the PC.
There are three aspects to User Virtualisation that can provide
significant additional benefit in a Windows 7 environment:
- Accelerated, low-impact migration to Windows 7 with a
seamless user experience
- Replacement of legacy user profiles to reduce management and
support costs
- Moving to low-cost, standardized Windows 7 virtual desktops
with ensured user adoption
