Summary

Centralis uses the latest solutions from Citrix to deliver a truly flexible solution for scientific staff at a leading international standards agency.

About the Customer

LGC is an international science-based company and market leader in analytical, forensic and diagnostic services and reference standards.

LGC methodology is extensively accredited to the international standard ISO 17025. With headquarters in Teddington, South West London, the LGC Group employs over 1200 staff in 21 laboratories and centres across Europe and in India.

" It was essential to have a secure and robust system in place to support this without disruption. Within a very short space of time this has been achieved. "

Ewen Anderson,
Managing Director, Centralis

Privatised in 1996 and now majority-owned by funds managed by LGV Capital, LGC was founded over 150 years ago as the Laboratory of the Government Chemist - a statutory function maintained by LGC today.

The Challenge

A progressive and innovative enterprise, LGC operates in socially responsible fields underpinning the safety, health and security of the public and the regulation of industry, for UK government departments and blue chip clients.

LGC operates internationally through four divisions - LGC Forensics, Life & Food Sciences, LGC Standards and Research & Technology, which includes specialist laboratories delivering contracts under the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and supporting LGC's designated role as the UK's National Measurement Institute for chemical and bioanalysis.

LGC collaborated with Centralis as part of a larger project that will see the delivery of corporate IT applications to LGC’s offices across Europe from a secure, centralised UK system.

" By working in close partnership with Centralis, we have been able to ensure that all personnel are provided with a reliable and consistent user interface, no matter where they are. Updates can be implemented in a matter of minutes. "

Stan Hughes, IT Project Manager, LGC

The Centralis Solution

Centralis worked with LGC to develop a highly resilient and scalable application delivery system using Citrix Provisioning Server and XenApp 4.5.  This will allow 1200 staff across its LGC Forensics, Life & Food Sciences, Research & Technology and LGC Standards divisions to access the IFS ERP system in their local language from any of its sites across the continent.

“LGC is a perfect example of a successful organisation that continues to grow and diversify across different European markets,” said Ewen Anderson, director at Centralis. “Due to this, LGC required an increasing amount of agility within its systems and it was essential to have a secure and robust system in place to support this without disruption. Within a very short space of time this has been achieved.”

Delivered from the UK headquarters in Teddington, Middlesex, the bespoke solution designed by Centralis will be housed across two server rooms.

The Benefits to the Customer

The implementation will also mean that any problems that may lead to downtime across the group can be resolved, while implementing any updates will be far simpler than before.

In addition, new Citrix Servers can be rolled out in ten minutes across the virtualised environment due to the capabilities of Provisioning Server.

Stan Hughes, IT Project Manager at LGC's Culham site, commented: “By working in close partnership with Centralis, we have been able to ensure that all personnel are provided with a reliable and consistent user interface, no matter where they are. Updates to the user interface can be implemented in a matter of minutes.”

Next steps

Later this year the solution will be expanded to include a third facility, providing a dedicated to disaster recovery capability.
